Mode and Mode 7 launch party at Colour, December 2019

Last December, D&K, Mode and Mode and Surpllus presented a special Melbourne launch party celebration and performance of D&K LOOK BOOK 2019 and Mode and Mode issue seven at Colour Nightclub on December 11. Mode and Mode 7 launch at San Serriffe, November 2019

Last November, Mode and Mode travelled to Amsterdam and London to launch issue 7, along with D&K LOOKBOOK 2019 (published by Surpllus). The issue presents the text works by D&K from 2012 to present. D&K (Ricarda Bigolin and Nella Themelios) produced writing—including ficto-critical prose, patchwriting, poetry, and screenwriting—to reconstitute components of fashion, such as garments, retail atmosphere and packaging ephemera.

Our Amsterdam launch, hosted by art and theory book store San Serriffe and the critical fashion collective Warehouse, featured a performance of the special edition D&K Covers (created by Chantal Kirby and Ricarda Bigolin) to house Mode and Mode and D&K LOOKBOOK 2019. This was followed by a London launch at Tender Books on December 4.

NGV Art Book Fair, March 2019

This month, Mode and Mode participated in the NGV Melbourne Art Book Fair. Our editor, Laura Gardner presented in the symposium Graphic Fashion.

‘Graphic Fashion’ looked at intersections between fashion and graphic design, from the margins to the mainstream. Independent publishers are leveraging their graphic design expertise to make fashion merchandise and capsule collections, as well as launching fashion labels, while experimental fashion designers are making publications that contribute as much to fashion discourse as do their garments. Speakers included Femke de Vries (Amsterdam), i-D Magazine (Australia), Tunica (New York, Paris & Mexico City), and Girls Like Us (Berlin), with moderation by Dr. Ricarda Bigolin.

Fashion TV, June 2018

Mode and Mode invites you to an evening of fashion tv at Longplay cinema. The screening brings together a series of clips from films, artworks, documented performance, performing art and classical fashion shows that document clothing as material on screen with footage by Charles Atlas, Vera Chytilová, Claire Denis, Alexander Kluge, Martin Parr, Éric Rohmer and Cinzia Ruggeri. The screening has been curated by Laura Gardner and Tim Coster, with suggestions from Matthew Linde, Kasia Gorniak, Annie Wu and Rowan McNaught.

The event coincides with the launch of the fifth issue of Mode and Mode, which centres on fashion writer Helen Hessel (1886—1982). Copies of the issue will be available for purchase at the event ($8—cash only).

Mode and Mode 6 launch at RMIT Design Hub, March 2018

The fourth edition of Mode and Mode contains a reprint of the lookbook publication Friction / Parade 99, created by Dutch fashion designers Keupr/van Bentm collaborating with Experimental Jetset for Paris haute couture fashion week in 1999. To launch the issue, the exhibition ‘Experimental Jetset – Superstructure’ at RMIT Design Hub hosted a reading by fashion curator Matthew Linde with Laura Gardner from the original Friction / Parade 99 publication; a fictive, poetic timeline that recounts the moments leading up to a fashion show that never took place. Held on the main gallery space of the exhibition, the event reflected on the possibilities of collaboration between fashion and graphic practices and the conceptual potential of writing and publishing in the field of fashion.
